Cause of Nerve and/or Artery Injury:

Nerve injury is a damage to nerve tissue.  The types are:

Neurapraxia – the least severe form.  The nerve structure stays in place put there is an interruption of the transmission down the nerve fiber.

Nerve Compression
Disruption of Blood Supply (ischemia)

Axonotmesis - This is a more severe nerve injury with disruption of the neuronal axon, but myelin sheath is maintained. This type of nerve damage may cause paralysis of the motor, sensory, and autonomic.

Crush Injury
Contusion
Overstretching of Nerve

Neurotmesis – most severe.  Not only the Axon, but the  encapsulating connective tissue loses their connectivity.  Most severe is transsection.

Local Anesthetic Toxicity

Artery damage must be recognized and treated rapidly to avoid damage to major arteries, veins, and nerves.  Failure to do so may lead to loss of limb or death.  Common causes are:

Penetrating Injury
Blunt Force Trauma
Explosives
Car Accidents
Bullet Wound
Knife Wound Due to Stabbing
