He has obtained several of the largest personal injury verdicts in the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia. Among his most notable personal injury verdicts are:

  • A $10,250,000 jury verdict in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City against Carefirst and a private practicing physician for the negligent delivery of a child resulting in permanent brain injury;
  • A $10,000,000 jury verdict against the University of Maryland Medical Center in a wrongful death case for the failure to diagnose a blood disorder leading to the death of a 19-year old man;
  • A $10,000,000 jury verdict in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against Bristol-Myers Squibb for defective silicone breast implants;
  • A $7,100,000 jury verdict in the Circuit Court for Baltimore County for the failure to diagnose colon cancer case resulting in the death of a 50 year old man;
  • A $6,200,000 million jury verdict in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City against a private physician for malpractice;
  • A $5,000,000 jury verdict in the Superior Court for the District of Columbia against George Washington University Medical Center; and
  • A $5,000,000 jury verdict in the Circuit Court for Charles County (the largest jury verdict in Charles County) for the failure to diagnose shaken baby syndrome.

In addition to dozens of multi-million dollar personal injury verdicts, Robert J. Weltchek has received:

  • A $150,000,000 jury verdict in Baltimore County against ExxonMobil in a 6-month trial stemming from massive groundwater contamination. The jury verdict is believed to be one of the largest in Maryland history.
  • A $25,000,000 jury verdict in Essex County, New Jersey against Bell Atlantic Corporation for defrauding a small business owner.

He has also obtained confidential multi-million dollar settlements against two major American auto manufacturers alleging negligent design of the seatbelts, the U.S. Government for a mistaken shooting by an FBI agent, and against Publishers Clearing House for allegedly defrauding a small business.

In addition to the above, Mr. Weltchek obtained one of the largest settlements in U.S. history, $185,000,000 in a case involving accounting/consulting malpractice against Ernst & Young, and was later hired by Ernst & Young to sue a prominent Washington, D.C. law firm for legal malpractice.

Mr. Weltchek earned his Bachelors of Arts Degree magna cum laude from Middlebury College and earned his Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Maryland, where he was awarded the Order of Barrister for excellence in trial advocacy. While in law school he was also a member of the national champion Trial Team.
